All About Jason Joo
(they/them)
Born and raised in Davis, California, I graduated from UC Berkeley in May 2024 as a Geography major and Theater minor, and am currently the Props Fellow at Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Some theaters I’ve worked with include Berkeley Repertory Theatre, California Shakespeare Theater, Shotgun Players, The UC Berkeley Theater, Dance, & Performance Studies Department, and BareStage Productions, a student-led performing organization. My heart lies in making art, and I am excited to learn more ways to create!
I am a passionate fabricator, with experience building props both large and small, with an eye for the fine details. I have spent a lot of time in the carpentry shop, building furniture and scenery, and have some metal shop and mig welding experience as well. I have additional experience with plexiglass, painting, sewing, and silicone molding. I love puppets, animatronics, and practical special effects, and hope to learn more about them. Some of my favorite films with practical effects and puppetry are Evil Dead 2, Guillermo Del Toro’s Hellboy, Alien(s), Mad Max: Fury Road, The Thing, Kubo and the Two Strings, Jason and the Argonauts, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Tremors.
Like a moth, I am drawn to pretty lights. I love to design and experiment with light, and tinker on electrical projects like practicals and soldering. I aim to emphasize Drama and Color in my designs. My two greatest inspirations are concerts and horror movies, but I also love to recreate realistic, everyday lighting. Some of the most inspiring shows I’ve seen recently have been Aespa, Rina Sawayama, Mexodus, Sunset Blvd, and Carly Rae Jepsen.
At home, I enjoy building models, particularly Gundams. I also love video games, especially rhythm games. Some of my favorites are Trombone Champ, Guitar Hero, Taiko No Tatsujin, Baldur’s Gate 3, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, Persona 5, and Resident Evil. I am an avid collector of records and CDs, particularly Korean, Japanese, and funk music. I am also a radio DJ at KALX 90.7 FM, UC Berkeley’s radio station.
