Rolling Step Unit - Uncle Vanya

With Berkeley Repertory Theatre

Designed By: Robert Brill

Another solo project I was given was rolling step unit for Uncle Vanya. It was designed to look unfinished, with bare wood framing underneath. I learned to cut and plane real red oak boards down for the treads, and used red oak laminated plywood for the rest. I routed only the sides of the treads that would hang over the sides. It was a challenge to align the stair stringers, but I learned a lot in the process of measuring the angles and lengths. Another challenge was in measuring and cutting the angle of the panel with molding that the balusters sat on, which I ultimately traced using cardboard and transferred it to plywood. After installing the molding to the diagonal panel, I realized that I would need to notch out the interior molding so it would fit over the steps. I also installed horizontal supports at the correct height for the casters to sit at the right height. I installed the handrail next, and used some mockup pieces of wood to find the angle for the balusters. Because the props needed to be air freighted to the next theater, I also had to install the balusters and top newel post with screws only, due to size constraints. I did not participate in the painting of this piece.
