Rehearsal Step Unit - Uncle Vanya

With Berkeley Repertory Theatre

Designed By: Robert Brill

When an initial design proved to be too difficult for actors to descend, I was tasked with building a new step unit. This was used as the back side of my rolling step unit, for actors to leave the stage. Construction was fairly simple, using one inch plywood for extra sturdiness.

This was one of the first pieces I got to finish as well, using a wash of brown paint and water to give the plywood the appearance of very aged bare wood, as if it had been sitting in a theater for many years. I weathered it further by darkening the screws and scraping at the edges with a variety of tools, such as files, planes, chains, and rasps. I further darkened parts of the steps to add dirty footprints to imitate “high traffic” areas.
